Architectural Design Translations

Architectural Design Translation Services

Companies that have not yet experienced the complex world translation management tend to believe that a native speaker of a language will suffice as a translator. (Un)Fortunately, this is not the case. There are many case studies available that highlight the unfortunate results when a company decides to take this route. One industry in particular where this holds true is the Architectural Design industry.

The vocabulary of this industry is rather complex and mostly unique. A speaker of the target language just can not start translating content. Sometimes even education in this industry is not enough. What is needed is the combination of education AND industry experience.

Accurate translation

Consider terms such as conservation environment, demand-controlled ventilation, tensile strength, and longitudinal reinforcement for the recessed composite column. Accurate translation of these terms require the criteria I mentioned above. These terms are used by Engineers when not only initially creating the design but also when the construction is in progress.

Incorrect Translation

Incorrect translation can and will most likely result in a building that can not stand the test of time. Worst yet, the building can create unexpected results while under construction. Therefore, it is vital that architectural design firms rely on a translation service provider that can provide a world-class translation service and has prior experience in the industry.

Avoid embarrassing translation errors

Avoid embarrassing translation errors

Embarrassing Translation Errors

South Korea’s President and his administration have been rather embarrassed by the translation errors while passing free trade agreements with various countries.

Consider this:

  1. Total of 207 errors was found in the EU FTA agreement (Korean version) alone;
  2. Errors ranged from simple grammatical errors to surprisingly enough, incorrect translations or omissions of the source text;

While err is to human, it is vital that all translations must go thru the proper quality assurances to ensure consumption readiness.

Ultimately, it costs more to produce quality driven translations. When organizations try to cut corners by not having translations reviewed or by using nonqualified translators-q, it will become obvious at some point. It is better to spend a little extra money and have the translations be done right instead of facing embarrassment when the errors come out in the open.

Advantages of a TM Server

Advantages of a TM Server

EPIC Translations has been asked, on numerous occasions, to outline the advantages of a TM server that a global organization can deploy to better manage language assets. This topic is never an easy one to answer because the needs drastically differ from organization to organization.

With that being said, I will briefly describe what a TM server is and then outline the single most important advantage:

What it is:

Generally speaking, a TM server allows you to share your TMs with different entities, such as translators, project manager, and proofreaders.  These entities can be internal or external.

Single most important advantages:

Why is this an advantage?

You will have the ability to share your TMs with internal or external resources in real time.  Ask yourself one question.  How do you currently manage and utilize your multi-lingual TMs?  Then imagine having the ability to store ALL of your multi-lingual TMs in one place where they can easily be shared with anyone regardless of their location.

One note of caution, however.  The TMs will have to be actively managed to ensure they’re not being populated with incorrect translations.  To that end, it is vital that you define a working flow that is compatible with your organization. Once defined, it must be rigorously followed.

EPIC Translations can help you to select, plan, install, test, and deploy TM servers for your entire global operation. Contact us today for more information.

Translations by Internal Employees

 Translating Documents by Internal Employees

When the need for translating documents arises at companies, the natural instinct is to use in-house employees for various reasons:

  1. Employees are easily accessible
  2. Employees understand the company products/services
  3. Employees understand the preferred lingo

While these are all very good reasons to use in-house employees for translating documents, there are also some drawbacks:

  1. Time taken away from core responsibilities
  2. Lack of rigorous translation quality controls
  3. Lack of creating a translation memory

Language Services Provider

For companies that will need translation services for at least once to twice a week, it makes good sense to outsource this activity to a language services provider (LSP) such as EPIC Translations.  This approach will allow you to build language assets such as a translation memory that can be effectively used for future translations to reduce time and cost.

The secret to using an LSP is carefully defining your translation requirements including the area of expertise.  This allows the LSP to ensure that the documents are translated by linguists who have education and experience in the defined area of expertise.

LSPs use 2 to 3 linguistic resources for each request.  A translation, an editor/proofreader, and a final review by the Project Manager.  This rigorous quality control allows a world-class translation to take place while freeing the in-house employee to review the translation and provide feedback to the LSP.

EPIC Translations provides translating documents service, free no-obligation price quotes for your consideration.  Contact us today for further information.

Small Translation Companies

The first advantage of working with a small translation company, like EPIC Translations, is that you have the most direct experience. We connect you directly to a translator and a reviewer who will work on your project personally. A small translation company does not outsource your project to yet another translation service provider like larger companies do.

Advantages Of Small Translation Company

Another advantage to working with a small company is that you get a more intimate experience. You work directly with our project manager, who handles your project on her own. There is a much shorter chain of command to go through to reach a translator, eliminating more possibilities for human error. At EPIC Translations, we give the clients frequent updates on the status of your project, so you’re not left wondering if your work is being neglected until the last minute.

Lastly, a smaller company values your business more than a large translation service provider. Here at EPIC, we will go above and beyond the minimum stipulations of a project to assure that our client is pleased with the results. Give us all call and experience all the benefits of a small translation company.

Korean Free Trade Agreement Translation Errors

Translation Errors

It was realized that translation errors occurred in a Free Trade Agreement between Korea and the European Union. This was the second set of errors found in the document. It was first reviewed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, where errors were found and corrected. After those corrections were made, it was reviewed by lawyer Song Ki-ho, where more errors were found.

Korean Trade Minister Kin Jong-hoon has ordered new proof-reading of the Korus FTA to assure that these errors will not be made in the trade agreement with the United States. The same speed will be kept, but the agreement will be released early, with a one month grace period to correct any errors before declaring the translation official.

“I’m naturally not good with making excuses. What is wrong is wrong and errors must be corrected, and we are in that process,” said Kim.

Financial Translations

Financial Translations Translators

With the increasing globalization of business and many companies holding offices in multiple countries, there is a need for everyone to receive the same information. This is especially important for any departments dealing with finances in a corporation. Because of this, the demand for financial translations has increased drastically. Financial translations require highly specialized translators because a common fluent speaker of a language does not have a proficient grasp on the difficult terminology involving finances.

Document translation is commonly used for annual reports, business plans, balance sheets, tax reports, cashflow statements and insurance documents. It is essential that a company relies on a accurate translation service provider, such as EPIC Translations, so they can match you with a translator that will fulfil the needs of your translation. Here at EPIC, we have a large database of translators with expertise in several areas. We guarantee we have someone here to meet your needs.

Pentagon’s Plan for a Universal Translator

Universal language translations

Universal language translation is becoming a top priority for the Pentagon. The U.S. Department of Defense, by way of DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency), is seeking $15 million in next year’s budget request to devote to a new project they have entitled BOLT. BOLT stands for the Boundless Operational Language Translation. Its goal is to enable communication through all different mediums and all languages. This is quite the undertaking considering the limited machine translation technology available currently.

Machine translation

Sophisticated machine translation technology has been sought after since the 1950’s, but we are still far from anything reliable in translation quality. Machine translations are often of poor quality, only providing the reader with the gist of the information. All intricacies of the original text or speech are lost.

The most advanced system out currently is Google Translate, which is still quite primitive in comparison to human translation. Considering this, it is surprising that DARPA feels that accurate machine translation is a possibility in the near future. Private companies have been working on machine translation software for years, investing millions of dollars with no successful tools as of yet.

Translation Service Provider

For DARPA to assert that within a year and only investing $15 million that they will develop and possibly perfect this technology, is actually quite absurd. This may, however, provide the translation industry with some valuable insight into bettering machine translation. Until then, the best way to go is to use a reputable translation service provider, who can link you to a qualified, human translator. EPIC Translations has a massive database of translators ready to complete your translation project quickly and without the messy errors of a machine translation.

Legal Translations

When handling documents dealing with the law, it is imperative that the translator is not only fluent in both the source and target language, but also has a deep knowledge of the legal system being dealt with. Legal Translations also hold much responsibility, because legal documents are often dictating a person’s rights. It is the translator’s responsibility that the person reading the translation has a full understanding of the document. If there are mistakes, it can lead to lawsuits and a loss of money for many people.

Legal translations Services Provider

Legal translations can be done on immigration documents, litigation documents, depositions, witness statements, trusts, wills, and many others. All of these documents listed hold heavy legal responsibility, thus the translator also holds that responsibility. Assure that your document is translated with 100% accuracy and use EPIC Translations for your next legal document translation. We have expert translators to get the job done right.
